When I Want To Know What You Think, I'll Ask You

If you dig splits with almost-punk-sounding Merge-type indie-rock bands then the '90s should be your deal, judging by my record collection at least. If you're one of the three people who have been reading this blog since 2008 -- yes, this blog is now 4 years old, doesn't time suck the life right out of you -- then you already know that Small and Pipe are two of my favorite bands from that era... so it would make sense that I would think this 7" is all aces. "Chuck's Buzz" is Small at their most Dinosaur Jr./Treepeople-est (I'm pretty sure this is the Eric Bachmann lineup, so that figures), while the Pipe song barges headlong with practically no chorus and comes off almost like a pop-punk version of Die Kreuzen, which is great. Pipe probably gets my vote for most-underrated band of the '90s, you people should look into them more often.

Small -

"Chuck's Buzz"

Pipe -

"Submariner"

That Pipe song just blazes. Never heard of 'em before (that I recall), I'll have to research more now.

"6 Days til Bellus", "Int'l Cement", and "Slowboy" (CDs) are all good

What great bands, not to mention an equally exceptional record label. Pipe absolutely ripped. I'm going to try to get some of their other singles up soon.

I think 'Yr Soaking In It' is their best single, plus it has a Replacements cover. Unfortunately, mine's scratched! I should probably look for another copy...

Matt W. of Matt label & Small was the AMD @ WXDU when I first started working there in '92, good times. Also worked at the cool local record store (Poindexter, RIP)

Pipe reunes (word?) pretty frequently, just did some shows with Archers of Loaf & will be playing Hopscotch in Raleigh this fall.

1992, wow, that's like FIFTY years ago

-- kid in Nirvana t-shirt who was born 3 years after "Dookie" came out

Apparently that child counts in dog years.

Anyone in a Nirvana shirt naturally isn't going to be very bright.
