Watching Everything Get Worse

I suppose it's about time I said something about the Guilty Faces LP, since it's easily one of the top handful of punk albums to ever come out of Connecticut. When I first found out that the LP was going to be on Deranged, I figured, as great as the record was, that Guilty Faces would end up on the cover of Razorcake (shitty mag) and be on every blog in the country in no time, but I guess I overestimated a bunch. I'm not even sure if the band is still active right now; I know they kicked out my second-favorite guy in the band before they had even finished recording the album (Mike, the bass player, who ended up spending the first half of this winter driving Circle Pit around on their tour). The singer, Tommy, had a side project for a while that had a cover of Kitty Badass' "Chevy Impala" on their MySpace, so that was kinda cool.

There's a whole list of bands lately doing some sort of variation on the Adolescents/Circle Jerks/SoCal '81 thing-- bands like Night Birds, Social Circkle, Psyched to Die, and so forth-- although I'm pretty sure Guilty Faces were doing it a year or two before most of 'em. In any case, if that's your thing and you haven't checked this album out yet, definitely look into it because it's fast and heavy and it totally rips. Great cool-as-shit Dangerhouse-styled cover art, too (the EP was good for that also). Here's most of side A to help get you started.

Stuck In A Nightmare Forever

After three weeks of dicking around trying to find a copy, I finally got ahold of the Guilty Faces "Nightmares" EP on Saturday, and wouldn't you know, it's really really great. Just for you, I made a tape of it (meaning these are listen-only files), so you can check it out and see that I'm not completely stupid sometimes and you really should buy this thing. Plus it's got one of the best sleeves ever, like a total '78 new wave/Dangerhouse happening, which should do plenty to kick your irrational consumerism into gear. Try Sorry State Records (that's where I found mine), and save yourselves three weeks of trouble.

Feeling Useless And Neurotic

click for enlarged view

Here's a bunch of photos of Guilty Faces from a killer basement show that happened last night on Whitney Ave in Hartford. (Replacements + Black Flag + Adolescents = Guilty Faces, in case you're wondering.) Guilty Faces have an EP due out really soon on Room 101 Records, and if the new song they've posted on their MySpace page (www.myspace.com/guiltyfaces) is any indication, it's gonna freakin' slay.

These are two rippin' tracks (crank 'em up!) from a in-studio demo that Guilty Faces recorded live at SideTwo Studio a few months ago; thanks to Tommy for sending me the song titles. If you want to hear the whole thing, go here.

Guilty Faces

Here's three songs from the Guilty Faces' 6-song demo, which came out not too long ago. I got a pretty decent idea that these guys were gonna be good when, instead of the usual crappy 10th-generation Hopeless Records bands from 5 or 6 years ago, they listed their influences as "Adolescents, Wipers, Minor Threat, Replacements, Circle Jerks, Bad Brains, Black Flag, The Faction, Social Distortion, Husker Du, Chronic Sick, Angry Samoans..." Fuck yeah!

I'm pretty sure the band is sold out of all their copies of this demo, but they are recording some new stuff that should be out soon. Someone said to me that the newer stuff sounds a bit more 'Mats-ish, but I couldn't tell ya. I'm usually too busy drinking three or four cans of Grape Crush in an attempt to raise my level of vegan awareness to be able to listen to any of the bands when I'm at shows.
