Standing Still Is Not Your Move

The Safes swung through New Haven to play Cafe Nine last month, only the show happened to be opposite the final weekend of shows at Popeye's Garage, so I was at Popeye's instead. I was able to get my mitts on the two new 7"-ers that The Safes have out now, though, thanks to the band sending them my way. One of them is a split with Blackbelts on Wee Rock Records, and the other is a split with Thee Lexington Arrows on Merrifield-- four new Safes songs in all, and all of them rock-solid and well worth tracking down, especially if you dig charged-up power-pop stuff like Cheap Trick, Kinks, Replacements, etc. I've actually had all of these songs --except for "Leavin'", which is a Thee Lexington Arrows cover-- on a CD-R of about thirty Safes demo tracks for a couple of years now, although I was told to keep quiet about it until the songs started coming out, which is why I'm only yakking about it now. (The rumor about a Safes country album is actually true; some of the songs are on the CD-R that I have, and "Wishin' and Dreamin'" and "All She Wants Is To Be Mine" are really good.) The song I've posted below isn't from the CD-R, but is my own vinyl rip from the split with Blackbelts, and for now you can also swipe a free download of "She's So Sad" from the Merrifield Records web site. Both records are available for sale through The Safes' web site as well.

Speaking of Connecticut power pop, do you have the debut EP of the Sighs somewhere in the attic?

Not only do I not have it... I've never even heard of it! (I had to look it up on Hyped 2 Death)

One of these days I'll fix my turntable...

'Charity' and 'Gotta Get Control' aren't too bad... I've just got a dub tape I made way back then but Hopefully Holly or another good soul will be able to offer up sometime.

I caught the Safes twice in Danbury and was at that Cafe Nine gig. Great band (the one vocalist reminds me of Paul Mahern), and genuinely nice guys.

I missed them the last time they played at Larry's, it was opposite something else again...
