Something sinister is happening to the guy in "Ashtray", exactly what I haven't figured out yet. On top of that the song doesn't really have a chorus, just three verses and then a neat guitar part (almost like a hardcore mosh part) where the chorus should be... and then it ends with a wicked ear-splitting guitar solo.
If there's a Pipe record out there that isn't totally the friggin' balls, then I haven't heard it. With "Warsaw" they even manage to make Joy Division listenable, which is somewhat of a first.

especially the neat guitar part - although I think there are several, not sure which one exactly you are referring to! I don't have much reference points for this kind of punk/hc, but 'Ashtray' reminded me a bit of listening to Ignition era Offspring, with a large amount of straight-up hardcore thrown in...
'Warsaw' - it's a first for this band, by a year, but Swing Kids did the exact same song in 1994. Was this Joy Division song particularly in favour amongst American punks c.1993?
I hadn't listened to Joy Division ('Love Will Tear Us Apart' excepted) previous to hearing the Swing Kids - so when I heard the original, it was a matter of "why... is... this song so slow... and not... spazzy?"!
Mind you, Unknown Pleasures is a beautiful album.

props on the Merge catalog - nice touch. That Drive Like Jehu 'Bullet Train to Vegas' 7" looks nice, eh?
I remark because I bought a Grant Hart 10" EP (2541) second-hand in a shop in Dublin recently, and it came with the original SST catalogue. Ironically, with the (then) latest Dinosaur Jr. album, Bug prominently displayed, and which I had just bought the reissue of elsewhere!
I think it's funny to look at old catalog sheets, and see the records that were generic everyday $3 purchases back then, but are on peoples' wish lists for $50 now.
I owned a couple of Joy Division records back in the early 80's, but I could never really get into them. When I was a hardcore punk kid, bands like The Cure and The Smiths and Joy Division were the enemy. Now they're revered...
