Maybe they weren't the tightest-sounding punk band ever or their songs have the best hooks, but it was hard not to like Gaunt, since they sounded like a bunch of average guys who just decided to pick up some instruments one day and bash out a few songs so that Jerry Wick (god bless him) could rail against everyday shit. I wasn't really the biggest Gaunt fan right off the bat because the first couple of records I heard of theirs were sorta wimpy, like the split with New Bomb Turks. This 10" is pretty good, though. The songs remind me a lot of Starvation Army, and not just because there's a song called "Salvation Army", about all the trendy rich kids picking the thrift stores clean ("They're taking all the good shit from the Salvation Army and making my life a living hell... I'm down to my last pair of jeans... I'm down to my last pair of socks"). I'm guessing if "Silly Watches" were written today it would be about pizza or something.

a couple of years ago Gaunt compiled a two-disc 'b-sides/singles/rarities' digital compilation for free and gave it out on Myspace--kinda sad that this excellent band had to give it away because "market demands" wouldn't justify the expense. it's raw as hell, and puts 'em in their proper place with the GBV/Lofio scene of the 1990s....

Mininum Tillage Farming is one of my favorite blogs... I think Mike Lupica (WFMU, Anti-Static) has mentioned that Gaunt compilation, also.
saw gaunt and supernova at the short-lived subzero club in danbury.
Why don't I remember Subzero?... (other than the fact that I've never been there)
it was right up the street from where cousin larry's is, and was barely open for a year. The Rhythm Pigs played there too.
I can't even picture in my head where that would be... man, when I think of all the weird places I've been to in CT to see shows. The Enfield roller rink, Boppers in Waterbury, some cavernous nightclub in Branford that had a big disco ball where 76% and AOD played once (I don't remember the name of that last one but I could probably look it up in one of my old zines)...
I think (whoever was calling themselves) the Misfits played SubZero.
And the Internet confirms it--the entire show is on the Japanese YouTube:

"Sub Zero... now PLAIN ZERO"
- Arnold Schwarzenegger, "Running Man"
All this Sub Zero talk made me think of that.
Smash TV--underrated video game. (The idea came from Running Man.)
I saw SABBRA CADDABRA at Sub Zero the same night NOFX played at Tuxedo and fat mike announced from the stage "bruce from AOD is here and man we're nervous"!
They'd better have been nervous - A.O.D. eats NOFX's lunch.
Fat Mike has a million dollar mansion. CAREER PUNX
If only we had stayed the wacky course. : (
comin' to the DB gig? Testa is.
What is the DB show?.... I'm at a loss. (At first I thought it might be the Bouncing Souls holiday thing, but then that would be BS plus it was back in February)
june 4th at heirloom. it really started as us just doing a favor for evan roberts (who asked AOD to play "the last LOUD YOUTH show")...and we were gonna have Greg of SUX play drums but now Dave can do it so it's a full-on reunion.
Sounds like a plan...
