I Got Opinions, Dude

I know being up Australia's ass is the big thing right now (and for good reason), but if you're not always about buying American then you should know that Canada's been really killing it lately, also. Cold Warps were easily one of the best bands that I heard from Canada all last year, and someone finally took their two demo tapes (from '09 and '10) and pressed each of them onto their own side of a 12" 45. The worn-ass picture of pre-fringe-jacket Who on the sleeve is no joke; if you're into bands like Bad Sports and White Wires, and think maybe turning one of them out a bit more 'mod' sounds like a neat idea, then hearing Cold Warps for the first time oughta quickly have you doing backflips, or something. The two songs I've posted below are my own vinyl rips, but you can hear the rest of the songs (including their minimal-effort cover of Cheap Trick's "Southern Girls") on their bandcamp ---> coldwarps.bandcamp.com checkk ittt...

Cold Warps -

"Stupid Tattoos"

"Hole In My Head"

Thanks for the alert, I will definitely check this out. I cannot decide whether I am living through the ripest period of my adulthood for punk - I'm 33 and miss HC - or whether I'm about to explode if I here one more band inspired by Killed by Death that tries to combine Mars and the Raspberries. I rant a lot about it over here, if you're ever VERY bored: http://prisonship.wordpress.com/2012/02/28/more-than-a-moments-worth-of-new-gunk/

Meanwhile, I'm on my way to the record store, having maybe reached the end of this stupid quest for proto-metal like Sir Lord Baltimore, Atomic Rooster and Conqueroo towards which the siren songs of certain collector scum are forever whisking me. Instead, today I'm armed with a list of stuff I gleaned from old Forced Exposures which has a good chance of popping up in a certain Ann Arbor record store (that and the ubiquitous Big Chief 7"s, Geez Louise!) I'm a little frightened by the fact that none of said 80s bands show up on your list, though: this could be trouble. But how much am I really going to let myself pay for Absolute Grey, Black Sun Ensemble, Walkingseeds, Easybeats, Skeletons or Sister Ray wax, anyway? (Please don't answer that.) 'Can't believe that Byron Coley cops to digging Steeleye Span, or that I'll now go buy the fucking thing like a trained Zombie.

A) I'm always very bored
B) Hardcore right now is better than it was at any point since the early/mid-80's, so go with your gut
C) I think I've heard of Walkingseeds, can't remember if they were any good. I had a chance to buy a used Sister Ray 7" the other week and I passed on it.
D) Byron Coley's one of those really old guys, remember. They can't help liking some of that really lame early '70s hippie stuff, from which they barely escaped its clutches, just like I can't turn away from an Eddie Money or Billy Squier song when it comes on the radio

Yeah, Coley also pushes Quicksilver, and believe me, I've tried, but...

Ended up seeing two different copies of Volatile today, scored one and a couple of Cynics 7"s I cannot imagine will disappoint. Really good to see you like Pipe, as they're featured in a 5 7"s for $1 bin that I can conquer if I pretend I also want to hear some Butterglory and/or Eggs.

It occurs to me that I've been confusing Sister Ray, Eric's Trip and, inexplicably, Poem Rocket for a long time.

Every Pipe record I've ever owned has been dynamite, and I own a bunch.

I usually confuse Sister Ray with any band that's covered "Sister Ray" on a 7". Or, like, with Boys From Nowhere.

Haven't heard Sister Ray since some forgotten hit song in the nineties nor three Dumptruck LP's to rip and maybe a Sister RaY or two if I haven't sold those cheapo records. But yeah I'm pent up for a cool Gun Club LP I found at the show last week for cheap and some old Nine Nine Nine looked good so that will be next. But thank God there's some active scensters like you guys I can lean on and most of the blogs have at least a little punk or hardcore. The dollar CD's I got recently need a rip to preserve 'em but those are posts I should be doing now but Gallon Drunk, Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions limited Advance CD and a Nine Inch Nails CD 6 song called Broken. Those are quicker to convert for sure. Well I'm adding these two to my folder for your blog, much easier play it later and hear some new music. THanks

While Canada's been on fire lately (to switch the metaphor) a lot of it seems to be in Ottawa - nice to see that the blaze is spreading towards the coast!
