We’ll Sail Til We Find Something Else To Hit

I hustled my way down to Hamden on Thursday night, knowing that The Field Recordings would most likely going on early and if I missed them I'd probably end up sitting through another neverending Questionable Band Night ("Wench is an all-girl band that plays danceable music spanning the genres of rock, pop, blues", "The Motion Sick is a socially aware indie rock band... profoundly simple in the melodic nods to their literary muses and societal inspirations" - okey dokey) before I'd figured out what had happened. I'd actually missed a chance to see The Field Recordings once before-- driving all the way to Danbury one night last month and THEY DIDN'T PLAY-- but this time, things worked out, saving me from having to sit through too many danceable genre-spanning bands.

Usually it's the other way around, but The Field Recordings are a lot poppier in person than on record, or at least they were the other night. Angles took precedence over power chords, plus you could see the band was playing off of each another instead of just running through their patterns, which (if not unusual) was pretty cool considering the environment. They debuted one new song, "The Apologists"-- way more Minutemen than Moving Targets, for reference-- and threw in a couple of really bad jokes, if maybe to distance themselves from the band that went on before them, who told much better jokes but were otherwise a whole lot crummier. I'm guessing you could see The Field Recordings play two or three sets and they'd sound different each time, which may or may not be true but I'll probably find out.

From now on I'll only try to see bands after they've gotten all their shots.

That last comment was spam-- I just modified it a little bit because it was funny.

The mp3 file on this post is now a listen-only (non-downloadable) file. I'm pretty sure that you can still download it for free at the Field Recordings' bandcamp site (google "Field Recorders", not Field Recordings), or through the Field Recordings web site.
