"Soil Samples" was a promo-only series launched by Warner Brothers in the early '90s, usually involving colored vinyl 7"-ers limited to 1000 or so, no doubt to capitalize on the brisk underground demand for Strangulated Beatoffs and Thrown Ups 45s. And what could be better than a brilliant and obscure Bash & Pop song, right? If Ron Wood still needs a bass player for the Faces reunion, he should look no further than Tommy Stinson.
I've never bothered listening to the flip side, His Name Is Alive, which is some kind of 4AD suck, I'd imagine. Feel free to go ahead and tell me I'm wrong.

That's an even WEIRDER pairing than the Genocide/MIA split 12 inch! (cripes I'm a vinyl geek!)
There's one Soil Samples split 7" that has Mudhoney and Jesus and Mary Chain, I think.
Well, at least that's got some STOOGES influence in common maybe! But then again, His Name Is Alive and Stinson have eyeliner in common...so maybe I should reassess my original opinion.
I have a few of these! I wonder if "soil samples" was WB attempt at "digging the underground"..it seems like the type of lame pun they'd have gone for in the heady 90s!
As for Tommy and HNIA having eyeliner in common...I wouldn't have though Mr. Stinson and Guns & Roses had anything more in common than drinking problems! I picked up his solo "Village Gorilla Head" thing for a dollar somewhere, and it's not the worst thing in the world. Not the best, but not the worst. Wasn't this the same era Westerberg was doing that oddball Grandpa Boy stuff?
Oh yeah, and Bruce...not as weird a pairing as the Swirlies/Drop Dead tape!! (I'm a cassette jerk!)
"Village Gorilla Head" is awesome.
I like "Once Twice Three Times a Maybe" a bit better, though.
Sean, they tell me The Swirlies stayed at my house once! I know, I know...not as cool as white flag staying there...but it was the 90's!
The mp3 file on this post is now a listen-only (non-downloadable) file. TOUGH SHIT, HIPPIE! No, actually, for those of you who missed the boat, I will do my best to respond to any e-mailed requests for the original file.
