Finding The Shore To Be Fucking Worthless

click for enlarged view

On Saturday I headed on over the Charter Oak for what was billed as a noise show, although the two bands I saw (Defective Fiction and, especially, The Book Slave) both have plenty of indie rock in 'em, too. Something else I saw-- putting "noise show" on the flyer is a good way to make sure that people aren't gonna show up.

Back when I first started going to shows, the younger kids I knew were all in hardcore bands, but now they're just as likely to be in arty little two-piece noise-rock bands (around here, at least), which is just as well. Not quite an arty two-piece because there's three of them, Defective Fiction use a lot of taped noise and messed-up samples in between songs during their live set, but the four songs on their EP are all not even three minutes long, which gets to the point a lot quicker. Defective Fiction also use the slow part/thrash part type thing a lot, while The Book Slave's songs are comparitively poppy, at times reminding me of Mammoth Hunter, to name another great Ct. two-piece outfit that everyone should definitely check out.

I only put up a few words about The Book Slave the first time I saw them, but you can still go back to that post from a couple weeks ago and check their song out, plus here's another one (from their "Shapes, Bend and Contort" EP) while I'm at it.

The Book Slave -

Defective Fiction -

The Book Slave song reminds me a bit of I Would Set Myself on Fire for You, minus most of the band, that is.

Once again, sir, you've mentioned a band I've never heard of before.

IWSMOFFY are from your area, no?

Local scene REPRESENT!

They were locals to me. They broke up a few months after releasing their second album.

hey! i thought i recognized you at this show but didn't say anything. next time i see you i will say hi for sure.

thanks for posting about us again, and for the pictures. we both like Mammoth Hunter a lot, i wish that they played more shows.

also, a year or two ago i listened to a ton of I Would Set Myself on Fire for You. i haven't listened to them much since, but i still enjoy them from time to time. being compared to them is cool. we get a lot of comparisons to Saetia, who are in a fairly similar vein.

It's alright about not saying hi - I'd rather keep a low profile at shows, instead of walking around as "the blog/zine guy" (although the camera flash from taking pictures tends to give me away).

The mp3 files on this post are now listen-only (non-downloadable) files. Go see either one of these bands if you're in the area, they'll probably give you one of their CDs for free.
