Solitude Never Burns Quite Like It Does

Staying out late on the night the clocks move forward isn't always the best idea, that lost hour still throwing me off after seeing Souvenir's Young America and City of Ships on Saturday. Apparently I'm not in the same league with the City of Ships' drummer, who was already hammered before they went on, and continued chugging away at a beer during their set.

Souvenir's Young America has some definite heft to their sound, as well as keyboards and elements of drone, which made City of Ships seem like a blast furnace in comparison; or else City of Ships knew that they weren't going to play for very long, and just brought the rock. Perpetual Motion's web site compares City of Ships to Hoover, but I never bought any Hoover records, so that bit of information doesn't help me much. Instead, I found myself thinking while they played that they're maybe what Engine Kid would've sounded like if Engine Kid had been any good.

The bands brought along with them this split LP, which had had literally come out just a day or two before; I fade 'em out here, but on the vinyl itself the songs flow into each other as one long track per side, which is kinda neat.

I also snagged a copy of City of Ships' tour EP, which I plan to post a track or two from later in the week, as I've been listening to "King Temp" in the car repeatedly over the past two days.

Best line of the week, right there.

Hey, Mr. PPA-- I should mention that SYA and See-oh-Ess are both from Virginia. That should probably give you a decent chance of checking out City of Ships live, which I definitely recommend.

Awesome -- according to their Myspace page, they'll be here sometime in early May, so I'll endeavor to check that out.

It's just a suggestion, if you get the chance. Then you could write another drunken blog post.

Souvenir's Young America remind me a bit of Jesu, who I know you're really into.

I actually cued up the SYA myspace stuff for a while this morning, and they sound great. I'll definitely be grabbing that.

One of their albums appears to have been put out on a label run by one of the guys from (AZ) Groundwork. Everything's connected, man.

The SYA MySpace page is definitely a better place to check them out than their official web site, which once you get past the intro pages is a bit of a disaster.

Hey, sorry, but the mp3 files on this post are now listen-only (non-downloadable) files. For those of you who came to the party late, I will do my best to respond to any e-mailed requests for the original files.
