Not that I'm looking to bring down the scrutiny of the Merge people around here, but I was listening to "Slowboy" in the car the other day ("I live in a shithole, baby!"), and had it re-installed in my memory chip re: what an awesome fucking band Pipe really were. Even though Pipe were one of my favorite bands back in the 90's, it usually takes me revisiting their records and CDs every other year or so to bring me back up to speed on just how great those records are.
I wanted to post the "Yr Soaking In It" 7-inch with the Replacements cover on the backside, but my copy has grown a couple scratches on it, so here's another one that's just as good. While I was listening to "Figure 8" just now it gave me the idea that the new Guilty Faces material sounds similar to this, so buy the new Guilty Faces LP when it comes out on Deranged soon, damnit.

I miss the Chapel Hill heyday of great bands named after mundane items...Pipe, Spatula, Rubbermaid..even Polvo. "Human Gutterball" might be the best thing I've heard all month. This is a total "pro" column example of spending stray dollars on obscure singles...dig in the crates enough and you're bound to find treasure!
Digging around and taking a shot is right - I mean, I don't think I would've bought this single at first glance without already knowing who Pipe were, just based upon how the sleeve looks.
The mp3 files on this post are now listen-only (non-downloadable) files. TOUGH LUCK, CHARLIE! No, actually, for those of you who missed the boat, I will do my best to respond to any e-mailed requests for the original files.
So five (!) years on from this, I finally took the advice to listen to that Guilty Faces, and holy shit. How good.
I look forward to 2019, when I start listening to whatever you like now.
That'll be pretty easy, because I don't like anything now
