Drop It Down

Here's the first Sukpatch 7", which was the first vinyl release for the previously tape-only Slabco, as well as the only Sukpatch record I own. I'm not sure why I haven't bought more of their records, seeing how I like this one so much. The best song here is "Empire Waist," which drops a cool low-key vocal over a snazzy keyboards/drums groove-- somewhat like the King Kong "Movie Star" single that I posted a couple months ago-- and has a killer hook, besides.

I remain mystified as to why someone would put a picture of Chris Russo on the cover while using blue and orange Mets colors, since everyone knows Chris Russo is a SF Giants fan.

By the time they put that record out on Grand Royal they weren't nearly as much fun as "Empire Waist." Funny how all those like-minded indie sampler bands (Land of the Loops, Sukpatch, Sientific American, Kitty Craft, etc.) kinda came and went so fast.

Holy cow, I've never heard of any of those other bands you mentioned.

Tully Craft, maybe, though that's something different, like Cat Butt and Cat Food, I guess.

It's "Tullycraft" not "Tully Craft" you moron

I was actually hoping that you'd appreciate how I held off pointing out that "Empire Waist" predates every Say Hi To Your Mom song ever recorded, and by almost 10 years.

this is a great 7 inch. and sukpatch has been doing it ever since. they just put out a digital album in nov of '08. search for it. their sound is timeless. Volume All Star is another great Slabco project to dig into...

The mp3 files on this post are now listen-only (non-downloadable) files. For those of you who missed the boat, I will do my best to respond to any e-mailed requests for the original files.

Wow, I love this band. I love the whole "quirky indie sample" loop style bands from the mid 90's to the early 00's. Kitty Craft, Land of the Loops, Sukpatch and Volume All*Star.

I think they are so brilliant. And it's a shame that that whole movement went away so fast.

Anyhow, is there anyway I can get a hold of this? Perhaps download it somewhere? The link to play the song won't even work and I would love to hear it!

great site you have here, i lived in Mpls for a long time, miss the Suk! i was living there (and playing there) when they moved to town, we played with them quite a few times. it was always a blast.

i still love all of these couch rock bands, Sukpatch, Volume All Star, Kitty Craft... glad to know you do to.

Sukpatch's "Ides" and "Hoops" 7 inchers following "Cabo San Lucas" to me all make for one nice round of music, wish they would have put those 10 songs out as an album - rewind time?

a couple of other like-minded projects that come to mind are simply titled Steven (which is Steven of Volume All Star's solo project, he has at least two albums out by Steven, Future Home of Burbank Elks and The Mystery of Attraction Cancelled... both great, and slightly more chilled back than VAS' two albums, but i really enjoy them as well). tho i do have a pretty hefty VAS addiction i deal with weekly.

on a related wave of sound, there is a band called Buckminster Fuzeboard, see if you can find their album called "How To Make C₆₀ BR₂₄ In Under an Hour" it is a fine adventure.

Analog Cabin, Explosion Robinson, Casiocore, Sientific American --> wow shit, all that musical history is worth digging back into. on we go!
